Security Test, which is run in conjunction with Thatcham Vehicle Security.

In the overall manufacturer ranking, Audi came in second place and Volvo was third.

The VW Sharan was top large MPV, while the Tiguan was the best crossover and the Phaeton the most secure luxury car.

The Manufacturer’s award is dictated by how many qualifying cars each manufacturer has in the security league. With the Caddy Maxi, Caravelle, Eos, Jetta, Passat, Passat CC, Phaeton, Sharan, Tiguan, Touareg and Touran, Volkswagen tops the list with 11 models.

Audis topped the supermini, compact executive, performance car and compact 4x4 categories.

What Car? editor John McIlroy said: “It makes sense for buyers to consider security when buying their next new car. If a thief has the choice of a car that they know is easy to break into or a top-rated Volkswagen product, their choice is going to be easy.

“Our tests have also shown that as manufacturers constantly improve the security of their cars, the motorist has become the weak link. Owners need to keep their car keys out of sight of would-be car thieves at all times. It’s only common sense.”

The Passat CC, which mixes elegant coupé styling with practicality and refinement, is set to benefit from a series of revisions to add new technologies and greater flexibility to help it represent stronger value than ever before.

For the first time the Passat CC can accommodate five adults thanks to the addition of an extra space situated between the rear seats, while up front satellite navigation is fitted as standard along with a touchscreen Bluetooth device.

This comes on top of the already comprehensive list of standard equipment which includes 2Zone electronic climate control, a leather steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake, 17-inch ‘Phoenix’ alloy wheels and six airbags.

The GT model also benefits from the revisions plus it gains Nappa leather interior, front and rear parking sensors and cruise control.

The GT trim level also retains 18-inch ‘Interlagos’ alloy wheels, ACC (Adaptive Chassis Control) electronically controlled pneumatic dampers and heat insulating tinted glass from the B-pillar backwards.

These changes on the entry-level model represent an extra £1,000 worth of equipment yet the revised Passat CC will cost only £515 more than the model it replaces. On the GT model the gap is even greater with an extra £3,000 worth of equipment being fitted yet the overall price of the car rises by £1,000.

The existing line-up of powerful yet efficient 1.8-litre TSI, 2.0-litre TSI and 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines and 2.0-litre TDI diesel engines remain, as does the choice of six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes on selected models.

The new model opens for ordering this week with prices set to start at £22,645 RRP on the road for the 1.8-litre TSI model.

Volkswagen’s four-door, four-seat coupé, the Passat CC, is now available to order with a seven-speed DSG gearbox which enhances performance and economy.

The compact and lightweight seven-speed DSG transmission, fitted with a pair of dry clutches, offers a number of benefits over a conventional automatic gearbox. A lower first gear ratio improves acceleration from a standstill to 62 mph to 8.5 seconds (8.6 manual) while the seventh gear has been raised to act as an overdrive function. This, in turn, gives an improved fuel consumption figure on the combined cycle of 38.7 mpg (37.2 manual) and CO2 emissions are reduced to 172 g/km (178 manual).

Available only in standard CC trim, and with the 1.8-litre TSI 160 PS engine, the Passat CC with seven-speed DSG gearbox features an extensive list of standard equipment including 17-inch ‘Phoenix’ alloy wheels, 2Zone Climatronic air conditioning, touchscreen stereo system with six-disc CD autochanger, driver’s six-way electrically adjustable seat, multi-function leather steering wheel, six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP).

Further innovative systems available as an option on the Passat CC include Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) which allows the driver to select from comfort, sport and normal modes to define the desired suspension and steering settings for any particular journey, and Park Assist which makes light work of parallel parking manoeuvres.

Prices for the Passat CC start at £20,622 (RRP on the road) for the 1.8-litre TSI 160 PS, while the new DSG gearbox commands a £1,243 premium. Prices for the range rise to £30,492 for the GT 3.6-litre V6 which produces 300 PS.

Volkswagen is also showcasing the Passat CC Individual which features a number of bespoke styling upgrades. The four-door coupé is presented in pearl effect ‘Moonlight Blue’, with newly designed 18-inch ‘Chicago Black’ alloy wheels and ‘Individual’ badging.

The interior of the Passat CC Individual is fitted with six-way power comfort seats upholstered with two-tone soft and nappa leather, complemented by piano black trim and an extended chrome package which includes chrome bezels on the door handles and switches for the electric windows and mirrors. Subtle ‘Individual’ badging continues with illuminated tread plates in the front and rear doors.

The Passat CC is the fourth ‘Individual’ model shown by Volkswagen, following the Eos, Passat and Touareg.

Passat TSI EcoFuel – Italian premiere

Making its Italian debut, the Passat TSI Ecofuel is fitted with the world’s first turbo direct-injection engine developed and configured to operate with natural gas. These developments enable the Passat TSI EcoFuel to run efficiently on both natural gas and petrol and to offer economy and low emissions with no detrimental effect on performance.

Accelerating from a standstill to 62 mph in 9.7 seconds and with a maximum speed of 130 mph the 1.4-litre 150 PS engine, coupled with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG gearbox, emits just 119 g/km of CO2 while developing 220 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm. A theoretical range of more than 300 miles using only natural gas is supplemented by a 31-litre reserve tank for conventional petrol which offers an additional 260 miles.

The winning streak continues: for the third time, Volkswagen's dual charged TSI engines have won the "International Engine of the Year Award" in the category "1 litre to 1.4 litres". It is no coincidence that the 103 kW (140 PS) and 125 kW (170 PS) TSI's, which are charged by both a turbocharger and a supercharger, are among the most efficient petrol engines in the world. The motto for these engines is "maximum dynamics with minimum fuel consumption". And that's also how the jury, comprising 65 journalists from 32 countries, saw it. According to one jury member, 'This engine does everything right and fits into the most diverse types of vehicles.' Moreover, the new 122 PS TSI took second place in the same category in its first attempt. The "International Engine of the Year Awards 2008" will be presented today in Stuttgart.

Dr Rüdiger Szengel, Head of Petrol Engine Development, accepted the award for Volkswagen commenting, 'Our TSI engines have set the standard since their introduction in the performance class of 90 kW to 125 kW. They achieve new levels of economy for petrol engines while providing performance that offers real fun. We take it as a compliment to the entire development team that our TSI has won again in the displacement class to 1.4 litres.'

TSI engines are already powering diverse models in ten Volkswagen families. The petrol direct injection engines between 90 kW (122 PS) and 169 kW (230 PS) cover the entire range from Golf to the recently introduced Passat CC. What's more, the new Scirocco will be off to a running start in 2008 with TSI engines. In the 122 PS version, it requires only 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it one of the world's most economical sports cars.
