The Life Cycle Assessment on which the commendation is based confirms that the TSI engines have significantly improved environmental characteristics compared with the predecessor models throughout their life cycle thanks to their smaller engine size and lower fuel consumption – while at the same time evidencing higher driving dynamics.

After a plethora of awards – including three prestigious “Engine of the Year Awards” last year – TSI technology has now also received the environmental commendation certified by TÜV Nord. After the DSG dual-clutch transmission, this, the second of the three basic technologies in the BlueMotion Technologies brand, has confirmed its outstanding Life Cycle Assessment. BlueMotion Technologies is the Volkswagen umbrella brand for all environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient products and technologies. Thanks to a reduction in engine capacity, sometimes quite substantial, the TSI engines significantly lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

For the environmental commendation, a 1.4 TSI engine with 90 kW was compared with a 1.6 FSI engine with 85 kW. A second test compared a 1.2 TSI with 77 kW and a 1.6 MPI engine with 75 kW. The environmental commendations, which are based on Life Cycle Assessments pursuant to ISO 14040/44, investigate the environmental characteristics of vehicles or technologies throughout their entire life cycle, i.e. from manufacture through use to recycling. The environmental commendation is only issued if the overall performance of the new development is better than that of the respective predecessor.

The environmental commendation can also be downloaded from the Internet at www.environmental-commendation.de. A background report presenting the methods and data is also available from the Internet.

The all-new Volkswagen Sharan has made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on an advanced new platform and featuring twin sliding doors, a seven seat configuration and a range of frugal yet powerful petrol and diesel engines, the Sharan is set to establish new standards of efficiency, practicality and refinement in its class.

At 4,854 mm in length, the new Sharan is 220 mm longer than the model it replaces, 92 mm wider and 12 mm lower. Despite these gains the new Sharan weighs 30 kg less than the previous generation model.

Access to the rear seats in the new Sharan is granted via a pair of large sliding doors that can, along with the tailgate, be specified with electric motors to operate automatically. The centre row features three individual seats that can be moved by up to 160 mm back and forth if required and, when not in use, can be folded to create a flat loadspace.

The third row of seats is made easy to access through the ability of the centre row of seats to slide and pivot forwards by 20 degrees. As a result of a wheelbase extended by 75 mm over the outgoing model, the new Sharan’s third row of seats is large enough to accommodate adults as well as children. As with the second row of seats, they can also be folded flat into the floor when not required.

At the heart of the new Sharan is a range of four advanced TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines linked to six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes. A 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine developing 150 PS while returning 38.1 mpg and emitting 172 g/km of CO2 is joined by a 2.0-litre unit which is mated to a standard DSG gearbox and produces 200 PS. This engine emits 201 g/km of CO2 while returning 32.8 mpg.

The diesel range comprises two 2.0-litre common rail engines producing 140 and 170 PS. In 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS form the Sharan returns 52.3 mpg while emitting 143 g/km of CO2 to make it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class. The 170 PS model emits 152 g/km of CO2 and has a combined economy figure of 49.5 mpg. To further improve efficiency, all models except the 200 PS variant feature Stop-Start and regenerative braking systems as standard.

The new Sharan is the most advanced people carrier Volkswagen has ever produced. Available as an option for the first time on the Sharan is the Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) system featuring electronically controlled pneumatic dampers with three selectable stages – normal, comfort and sport. In addition, a new version of Park Assist makes its debut on the Sharan. The system is now capable of guiding the vehicle into parking spaces at right angles with the direction of traffic as well as parallel spaces.

Following its international debut in Geneva the new Sharan will go on sale in the UK later this year with prices and specifications due to be announced nearer this time.

The new Polo GTI has been unveiled, promising to be the fastest, most focussed and cleanest performance Polo yet produced.

The original performance variant of the Polo was unveiled in 1986 in the form of the G40 Coupé – a car that mixed a fast-revving, 113 PS, supercharged engine with a low kerbweight and sharpened responses.

Fast forward 24 years and the new Polo GTI bears similarities with the G40. At its heart is a 1.4-litre TSI engine that uses a supercharger from idle through to 3,000 rpm at which point the turbocharger cuts in to provide boost. The result is an output of 180 PS at 6,200 rpm and 184 lbs ft of torque from 2,000 rpm which, when aligned with a 1,184 kg kerbweight, allows the Polo GTI to accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 142 mph.

Despite a keen focus on performance, the new Polo GTI is capable of delivering 47 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 139 g/km of CO2.

The TSI engine is linked to a compact seven-speed, twin-clutch DSG gearbox that channels drive through the front axle. In addition, the Polo GTI is fitted with the XDS differential, an electronic cross-axle traction control system for improved traction and handling. The XDS system is a functional extension of the electronic limited slip differential (EDL) which is a part of the standard ESP system.

In order to sharpen responses, the Polo GTI is fitted with new springs and dampers which results in a 15 mm lower ride height than the conventional Polo.

Like its Golf GTI sibling, the Polo GTI features significant aesthetic changes. A new front bumper featuring a deep airdam is joined by a honeycombe grille element with horizontal red strips and a simple GTI badge. New headlight units complete with the option of LED running lights lend the Polo GTI an imposing new look.

Further back, a subtle sill extension wraps around the lower edge of the body while at the back a new rear bumper features a small diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts. The Polo badge is replaced by a simple ‘GTI’ version.

Finally, a set of 17-inch wheels identical to those fitted to the Golf GTI are fitted along with a set of red brake callipers.

The changes continue inside the Polo GTI with revised dials, a new, flat-bottomed GTI steering wheel complete with small gearshift paddles and contrasting red stitching, aluminium pedals and new, heavily bolstered front sports seats finished in tartan trim. Subtle gloss black trim covers the centre console while the headlining is now finished in black.

The new Polo GTI is due to arrive in the UK in the summer at which point pricing and specification will be announced.

Lighter, cleaner and ready for all conditions: The New Touareg

The all-new Touareg has been unveiled – a car which is up to 200 kg lighter and up to 20 per cent more fuel efficient than the model it replaces. It’s sharper, cleaner and yet, in Hybrid form, able to out-accelerate many hot hatches while returning 34 mpg on the combined cycle. The new vehicle maintains all the same virtues of space, comfort, refinement and off-road and towing ability that have led the original Touareg to build up a loyal following since its launch in 2003.

Clean new styling which draws inspiration from the design direction established by the Golf Mk VI, the new Polo and the New Compact Coupé concept lends the new Touareg greater presence and a lower drag coefficient without sacrificing the functional requirements of short front and rear overhangs for off-roading.

The overall length and wheelbase of the Touareg have each grown by 40 mm to measure 4,758 mm and 2,900 mm respectively. The width of the new Touareg remains as before at 1,928 mm while overall height drops by 20 mm to 1,724 mm.

The changes over the outgoing model extend far beyond new styling. Standard examples of the new Touareg will feature an eight-speed transmission as well as, on the majority of models, Start/Stop technology, touchscreen satellite navigation and leather upholstery. In addition, a choice of advanced new options can be specified including High Beam Assist that automatically dips the headlights when it senses oncoming traffic. As well as Side Assist to warn of vehicles occupying blind spots, adaptive roll compensation air suspension and air conditioned and massaging seats.

At the heart of the new Touareg is a range of highly efficient petrol and diesel engines and, for the first time, a Hybrid.

The new Touareg Hybrid brings together a 3.3-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine producing 333 PS and 265 lbs ft of torque and an electric motor generating 47 PS, resulting in a total output of 380 PS and 428 lbs ft of torque. The electric motor can operate independently of the combustion engine making the new Touareg a full hybrid. On electric power alone the new Touareg is capable of travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph. Alternatively the electric motor can supplement the V6 engine to provide a useful boost during overtaking manoeuvres and allows the Touareg Hybrid to accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 149 mph.

The entry-level engine and the likely volume seller is a powerful and refined 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine generating 240 PS and 405 lbs ft of torque while returning 38.1 mpg and emitting 195 g/km of CO2 to place it in VED band J.

A new 4.2-litre TDI V8 engine producing 340 PS and 590 lbs ft of torque sits at the top of the new Touareg range. Despite its substantial power and torque outputs the new engine is still capable of achieving 31 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 239 g/km of CO2.

The new Touareg range will extend to four versions in the UK: SE, Altitude, Hybrid and Escape. The Escape model, available with the V6 TDI engine, features a system called 4XMOTION which comprises reduction gearing, centre and rear differentials that can each be fully locked for off-road applications and five stage control for the four wheel drive system. The first stage is for on-road applications, the second is for off-road use and activates automatic control for the mechanical differential locks, stage three engages the low-range gearbox with revised mapping of the gearbox to raise the shift points and switches off the automatic upshift in manual mode. Stage four applies the centre differential lock, stage five adds the rear differential lock.

The greater refinement afforded by the new drivetrain is matched by an all-new interior featuring a subtle mix of leather, wood and aluminium highlights and more space than ever before thanks to the longer wheelbase on which the new Touareg sits. Though the Touareg remains a five-seater, legroom in the rear has grown significantly due to the new sliding rear bench and reclining backrests while the boot measures from 580 litres to 1,642 litres depending on the seating arrangement.

Production of the new Touareg for the UK market starts in June before first deliveries commence in August. Prices and specifications will be announced nearer this time.

For the first time ever, the EuroNCAP Institute in Brussels compiled all of its crash test results for the year 2009 and named the safest car of the year: The Golf won out against the competition with a total of 103 points.

The Golf had already attained a five-star EuroNCAP rating in the year 2008. Initially, this testing programme − conducted since 1997 − only assessed frontal crashes, side crashes and pedestrian protection. After stricter criteria were introduced at the beginning of 2009, the Golf was re-tested, and it performed impressively in all four categories: Occupant protection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems. The bestseller from Wolfsburg once again attained the coveted five star rating with the top score of 103 points, earning it the title of “Safest Car of 2009”. In total, 33 cars were tested last year under the new, stricter and more extensive EuroNCAP crash testing procedure.

Electronic safety and assistance systems that help prevent accidents and serious injuries are now also incorporated in the rating of the new, stricter assessment method. The Golf offers maximum safety with standard safety features that include ESP with counter-steer assist, ABS with braking assistance, anti-slip regulation (ASR), electronic differential lock (EDS), engine drag torque control (MSR), trailer stabilisation, Isofix mounting brackets for two child seats on the rear bench as well as airbags for driver and front passenger with passenger-side deactivation, including knee airbag for the driver and a head airbag system for front and rear passengers with side airbags.

The Golf not only fulfils European safety standards. In 2008, the compact car earned the prestigious title of “Top Safety Pick” − awarded by the independent US safety institute “Insurance Institute for Highway Safety” (IIHS). In this evaluation, vehicles were tested in a frontal crash at 40 mph (64 km/h) and in a side crash at 31 mph (50 km/h) with a movable barrier shaped like the front end of an SUV. In addition, seat behaviour was studied in a rear-end crash.

Commenting on the award, Vincent Kinner, Head of Volkswagen Fleet Services explained: ‘It is a great honour for the Golf to be named BusinessCar of the Year. This award is particularly important to us and we are very proud as it was voted for solely by the publication’s readership, a highly influential group within the fleet arena.’

The 2.0-litre Caddy TDI van, tuned by RacingLine to produce 260 PS and over 500 Nm of torque, will make its public debut on the Volkswagen Racing UK stand (no 6200) at the Autosport International & Pistonheads Show at the NEC from 14 to 17 January, while its first race of the season is scheduled to be at Oulton Park, Cheshire on 3 and 5 April.

‘I started racing last year and realised this was something I really wanted to do,’ said Simon Elliott. ‘My wife has now given me permission to do the full season, and I’ve managed to not only persuade my predecessor Peter Wyhinny to let me take over driving the van, but more importantly we have new sponsors for this high profile Caddy van,’ he continued.

Martin Quail, Head of RAC Corporate Partnerships, said: ‘We were excited to be approached with the opportunity to sponsor the Caddy in the Volkswagen Cup. It provides us not only with the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with Volkswagen further, but also to engage with business customers and motor racing fans alike.’

At the annual ceremony, held last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, the new Polo kicked off a successful evening for Volkswagen claiming the hotly contested Supermini title and was also named Best Buy in the more than £11,000 sub-category. These accolades for the SE 1.4-litre 5dr model add to a string of awards which the new Polo has won since launch in September 2009, including the 2010 European Car of the Year title.

Presenting the Polo’s award, What Car? Group Editor, Steve Fowler commented: ‘We first got behind the wheel of the new Polo at the Geneva Motor Show and we were immediately blown away by its airiness and the quality of its interior. The Polo’s fine drive and a cabin that is effectively a Golf in miniature had us convinced.’

Volkswagen’s second major award of the evening went to the Golf hatchback which successfully defended the honour of Small Family Car for the fourth year running. Shortlisted for the award as the Best Buy in the £13,000 to £18,000 sub-category, and in a repeat of the 2009 Awards, the title went to the Golf SE 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS 5dr model.

Steve Fowler commented: ‘The Golf is a great all-rounder with a record-breaking star rating tally that has yet to be beaten and, to be honest, we’re not sure it ever will be. With a cosseting ride that shames that of many luxury cars, it’s all the car that most people will ever need.’

Completing a strong showing for Volkswagen at this year’s awards, the Scirocco was also highly commended. The 1.4-litre 160 PS model was named as the Best Buy coupé in the under £25,000 category.

Chris Craft, Director of Volkswagen UK said: ‘I am extremely proud of these awards and to see three of our key models performing so strongly this evening. The new Polo has enjoyed a fantastic reception since its launch last year, and these latest awards are a good foundation for continued success looking forward.’

Innovative new Compact Coupe; unveiled at Detroit Auto show

Volkswagen has unveiled the New Compact Coupé, a concept that delivers the seemingly contradictory mix of a petrol-engined, practical, performance-orientated coupé with extraordinary economy and sub-100 g/km CO2 emissions.

The New Compact Coupé, unveiled for the first time at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is capable of delivering economy and performance at the same time thanks to the adoption of a highly efficient 1.4-litre TSI engine developing 150 PS and 177 lbs ft of torque linked to a seven-speed DSG gearbox and an electric motor powered by a lithium ion battery. The electric motor, which generates 27 PS, can either work independently of the engine to make the New Compact Coupé a Full Hybrid or in tandem to provide a useful boost for overtaking.

Further optimising the efficiency of the vehicle is a ‘coast down’ system that takes the form of a clutch that disengages the TSI engine from the DSG transmission when not required to reduce friction. In addition, the kinetic energy that would otherwise be wasted is recovered through the electric motor which channels the power back to the lithium ion battery.

The result is the ability to accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 8.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 141 mph mixed with a combined fuel figure of 67.2 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 98 g/km.

Measuring 4,540 mm in length and featuring a 2,650 mm wheelbase the New Compact Coupé sits between the Golf and Passat models in terms of size.

Styled by a team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design, and overseen by Walter de Silva, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, the New Compact Coupé marks an evolution of the styling direction already seen on the Golf and Polo models.

Clean, uncluttered lines mix with sharp detailing including intricate bi-xenon headlight units, 19-inch ‘Lugano’ alloy wheels and an aerodynamically efficient grille element to lend the New Compact Coupé an elegant yet imposing stance.

The theme continues inside with four bucket seats finished in ‘Berry White’ leather and clean, simple surfaces. Despite being a coupé the concept features a large, practical boot measuring 380 litres.

The vehicle remains a concept at present with no immediate plans for production.

This pioneering addition to the Eos range offers customers a new entry-level 1.4-litre TSI engine that, fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, produces 122 PS and 147 lbs ft of torque. As seen on other models in the Volkswagen BlueMotion Technology range, but fitted to a petrol engine for the first time, these additions include a number of features to maximise efficiency and improve fuel economy.

Regenerative braking, start/stop and hill hold systems alongside a visual gear change recommendation are all fitted as standard and help to optimise fuel consumption, resulting in a combined figure of 45.6 mpg. In comparison to the outgoing 1.4-litre TSI engine that these BlueMotion Technology models replace, carbon dioxide emissions are also improved from 152 g/km to 144 g/km which moves the entry-level models of Volkswagen’s four-seat convertible coupé into VED band F, saving drivers a further £25 a year.

The Eos BlueMotion Technology models accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 10.9 seconds and go on to a top speed of 121 mph.

As with all models in the Eos range, equipment levels on both BlueMotion Technology trim levels, S and SE, remain comprehensive. ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), twin front and side impact airbags, Climatic air conditioning, fog lights, electric windows, electric heated and adjustable wing mirrors, radio/CD player, 16-inch alloy wheels, lockable load through provision and folding hard-top complete with sliding/tilt sunroof are all fitted standard. For an additional premium of just £1,100, the SE BlueMotion Technology adds further equipment including 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and front sports seats, parking sensors, automatic headlights and dusk and rain sensors.

Eight months before it arrives in the UK this September, the new Volkswagen pick-up, the Amarok, is demonstrating its power, durability and off-road performance by following the Volkswagen Motorsport team currently taking part in the gruelling Dakar rally across some of the toughest terrain in South America.

There are a total of 35 Volkswagen Amaroks being used as support vehicles by the Volkswagen team and the official organisers, ASO, throughout this year’s 5,600 mile event. The Dakar rally started from Buenos Aires in Argentina on 1 January, and crosses the Andes to Antofagasta on the Pacific coast in Chile, before taking a more southern route to the finish back in Buenos Aires on 17 January.

The route includes navigating the vehicles along mountain passes at an altitude of more than 4,000 metres, as well as through the world’s driest desert, the Atacama, exposing both the vehicles and their crews to extremely gruelling tests. Although not competing, the drivers of the Amarok support cars are still under constant pressure to keep up with or to get ahead of the competitors.

‘We are thrilled to put the new Amarok through its paces as part of this long distance challenge, the world’s toughest, before its official launch,’ said Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

More details, images and videos of the new Amarok, as well as a daily blog from the Dakar rally is available from www.volkswagenamarok.co.uk.

Designed to tackle the toughest off-road terrain, the new Amarok is offered with an electronic differential lock (EDL) and Off-Road ABS to significantly shorten braking distances in off-road conditions or gravel roads. At speeds under 20 mph it also activates Hill Descent Assist to control hill descents while the ESP Plus system includes Hill Hold Assist which prevents the vehicle from rolling back by holding it in place on inclines until the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

The Amarok will be available as a four-door double cab version from launch with a single cab model to follow in 2011. It combines the robustness of a pick-up with innovative technology, high safety standards, excellent fuel economy and Volkswagen’s renowned standards of comfort, quality and durability.

On 2 January, Volkswagen will line up on the start of one of the most demanding events on the motorsport calendar with five factory prepared Race Touaregs. Each of these rally prototypes, driven by some of the most successful names in the world of cross-country rallying, will aim to complete the gruelling 9,000 kilometre course with only one goal – to defend the coveted Dakar Rally title.

The five teams are made up of the 2009 Dakar winners Giniel de Villiers (ZA) / Dirk von Zitzewitz (D), Dakar Rally veterans Carlos Sainz (E) / Lucas Cruz (E) and Mark Miller (USA) / Ralph Pitchford (ZA), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q) / Timo Gottschalk (D) and the most recent additions to the driver line-up, the Brazilian partnership Mauricio Neves / Clécio Maestrelli.

For the entire two week duration of the Rally, regular updates from the team will be available from the Volkswagen Motorsport media site – www.volkswagen-motorsport.info. These updates will include daily stage results, press releases, interviews and high resolution images.

Thanks in part to the engine’s small capacity, the Scirocco returns a healthy combined economy figure of 44.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 146 g/km, making it the cleanest petrol model in the range.

The new entry-level model benefits from a comprehensive list of standard equipment including a six-CD autochanger with iPod preparation, rain and dusk sensors, a multifunction computer, air conditioning and 17-inch ‘Donington’ alloy wheels as well as a host of safety features including ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and six airbags.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released the first official images and more details of its new pick-up, the Amarok.

The Amarok, which will be available as a four-door double cab version from launch with a single cab model to follow in 2011, combines the robustness of a pick-up with innovative technology, high safety standards, excellent fuel economy and Volkswagen standards of comfort, quality and durability.

Production of the Amarok is about to start at the Volkswagen factory in Buenos Aires, Argentina ahead of its worldwide launch starting in its native South America in early 2010 and in Europe next summer, with first models expected to be in UK Volkswagen Van Centres in September 2010.

The Amarok has a generous payload capacity of up to 1.15 tonnes and maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes. Its 2.52 m² cargo area has the largest dimensions in its class at 1,555 mm long and 1,620 mm wide, plus a best in class width between the wheelarches of 1,222 mm, which means that for the first time on a mid-size pick-up, it is possible to load Euro pallets sideways, saving on space.

The official photos show the Amarok reflects the latest Volkswagen design DNA with frontal styling in line with the latest Transporter and Golf. It is 5.25 m long with a ladder frame chassis and will be offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive and switchable or permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

For maximum convenience, the switchable all-wheel drive is engaged by the push of a button, and also has low off-road gearing.

The full-time all-wheel drive version is a rarity in the pick-up sector, and uses a Torsen differential to distribute drive at a 40:60 ratio to the front and rear axles for excellent vehicle dynamics and high traction, and also ensures that the wheel with the best traction always gets the most power. A rear differential lock is available.

Under the bonnet there will be a choice of two 2.0-litre fuel-efficient, Euro5 compliant, common rail TDI engines producing 163 PS, with torque of 400 Nm at a low 1,500 rpm, or 122 PS with maximum torque of 340 Nm from 2,000 rpm.

Both engines have a six-speed manual transmission and will have impressive fuel economy with low emissions to make the Amarok the first all-wheel drive pick-up in this class offering CO2 emissions of less than 200 g/km. Like the new Transporter and Caravelle, the Amarok has a gearchange indicator to help drivers achieve the best fuel economy, which with an 80-litre fuel tank should offer a range of over 600 miles.

22 days until the 2010 Dakar Rally

From high-tech nomads for high-tech nomads: Volkswagen has launched a new iPhone application about the Dakar Rally in Apple’s online store today. Under the name of ‘Volkswagen Rally mobile – 2010 Dakar’, the application is now available free of charge. Before and during the Dakar Rally, it will send news, results, videos and background information directly to the user’s display.

iPhone users will be kept up to speed about the Dakar programme of the five factory-prepared and factory-fielded Race Touareg vehicles from Volkswagen, receiving exciting insights into the rally world of Volkswagen Motorsport. The Wolfsburg-based automobile manufacturer will contest the off-road classic that leads through Argentina and Chile – running twice across the Andes as well as through the gruelling Atacama desert and the legendary pampas – from 2 to 16 January 2010 as the title defender.

‘Volkswagen has always stood for innovations in motorsport,’ explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Kris Nissen. ‘At the last Dakar Rally, we were the first automobile manufacturer to win the event with diesel power and the Scirocco Cup, launching next year will be the world’s first one-make cup to use eco-conscious Bio-CNG (bio-compressed natural gas). The iPhone application for the Volkswagen’s involvement in the Dakar is unique in the world of rally racing to date as well and offers users of the cult mobile the chance to stay informed about current Dakar events around the clock.”

Information and interaction: ‘Rally mobile’ is always up to speed

In addition to news such as daily reports and quotes from the bivouac, the iPhone application includes multimedia contents and interactive features. ‘Rally mobile’ provides daily video summaries of the stages that last about three minutes, sound bytes from the Volkswagen factory pairings via sound files and fascinating photographs. A wealth of background information complements the selection: in addition to receiving an interactive overview of the Race Touareg 2 and its features, iPhone users will have access to detailed stage information and maps of the Dakar. In addition, they are provided with interesting facts about Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers and company – thanks to extensive biographical information supplied about the drivers and co-drivers. ‘Rally mobile’ is always up to speed with the latest results, daily classifications and overall standings of the Dakar, as well as all other contents being made immediately available after the end of the stages.

The New Polo is Car of the Year 2010

“The new Polo stands for German engineering craftsmanship and superior cutting edge technology. The fifth generation Polo was designed to address customer expectations with even greater uncompromising standards. That is why we are naturally very pleased to see our efforts validated in the form of this award,” says Professor Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Group.

Selection as Car of the Year is one of the oldest and most esteemed awards in Europe. The best of all new car introductions have been awarded annually since 1964. The last time a Volkswagen won was in 1992: Back then the new third generation Golf emerged victoriously over the Opel Astra and Citroën ZX. In today’s competition, 59 jurors from 23 European countries cast their votes. The new Polo won with 347 points, outpacing the Toyota IQ.

Hakan Matson, president of the jury, had this to say at the award ceremony in Madrid: “It was the Polo’s comprehensive safety equipment and its advanced range of engines that impressed us the most. On the Polo BlueMotion Volkswagen was also able to add a very fuel-efficient yet affordable car to its car programme.”

The Polo’s selection as Car of the Year 2010 is the crowning achievement of an extraordinary year for the new Polo after already being named Best Car 2009 by “auto motor sport” magazine and winning the Grüne (“Green”) and the Goldene Lenkrad (“Golden Steering Wheel”) awards by publisher Springer Verlag − as well as the Auto Trophy by “Autozeitung” just a few days ago.

Not only was the award jury impressed by the new Polo. Since its market launch in May of this year, Volkswagen has received over 130,000 orders for the new benchmark car of the compact class. The Polo is available as a dynamic 3-door and comfortable 5-door in Germany. As the Polo BlueMotion, just 3.3 litre fuel consumption makes it the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly five-seater in the world.

With 60 tonnes of material and 17 support vehicles, Volkswagen’s 2010 ‘Dakar’ Rally crew has embarked on its voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to South America. From the port of Le Havre in France, five service trucks, three equipment trucks and two race trucks belonging to the Volkswagen Motorsport factory team set out on the longest part of the journey – the four week passage to Buenos Aires in Argentina.

To successfully master the challenge of the world’s toughest rally, the winning team of the past Dakar Rally in Argentina and Chile will tackle the title defence project from 2-16 January 2010 by fielding five Volkswagen Race Touaregs. The drivers – Carlos Sainz (E), Giniel de Villiers (ZA), Mark Miller (USA), Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q) and Mauricio Neves (BRA) – will be supported on location by 80 service crew.

‘For Volkswagen, the preparation for the Dakar Rally entered its hot phase as early as at the end of September. Today the cargo loading and embarkation of the support crew marked the completion of another stage for the team,’ said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. ‘And of course, every successful completion of these individual steps makes us look forward to the ‘Dakar’ in Argentina and Chile, which as the title defender we want to again decide in our favour, with even greater anticipation. Today, a major portion of the logistical effort was accomplished.’

The Grande Brasile and its precious cargo: joint passage of all participants
Dakar Rally organiser A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation) made it possible for all European participants to transport their material to South America by ship by centrally organising the voyage. The cargo ship Grande Brasile is transporting the majority of the material for the 373 participating teams to the start line in Argentina.

On 28 December – exactly 27 days after the Grande Brasile’s departure from France – the teams will receive their trucks and other support vehicles again, including six Volkswagen Panamericana Multivans that will be used to transport the Volkswagen crew across the demanding South American landscape. Work will then start on location for the 80 team members as the support vehicles will be checked immediately after clearing customs. After this, each vehicle has to go through official scrutineering, just like the rally vehicles, to ensure they have all the necessary modifications including safety features and a sufficient water supply.

On 1 January 2010, when the starting signal is given at the ceremonial ‘Dakar’ start, the armada will embark on its 9,000 kilometres (5,625 miles) tour of Argentina and Chile.

Pioneering Up! Lite concept unveiled at Los Angeles motor show

Drawing inspiration from the L1 Concept which made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Volkswagen has today unveiled the pioneering new Up! Lite concept, a vehicle which sets new standards in economy and efficiency.

Packaged in a body with a coefficient of drag measuring just 0.237, the Up! Lite is capable of seating four adults in comfort yet thanks to its hybrid drivetrain it can travel 115.7 miles on a single gallon of fuel while emitting just 65 g/km of CO2.

A combination of efficiency gains make these figures possible, but perhaps the most important is a total kerb weight of just 695 kg – that’s almost 30 per cent lighter than Volkswagen’s Fox city car.

Powering the Up! Lite is an 800 cc two cylinder common rail diesel engine closely linked to that seen in the L1 Concept developing 51 PS at 4,000 rpm and 88 lbs ft of torque between 1,800 rpm and 2,250 rpm. The diesel engine is combined with an electric motor developing 14 PS to give the Up! Lite a useful boost when overtaking. Alternatively it can be disengaged from the diesel engine entirely and used during low speed manoeuvres. Gear changes are carried out via a seven-speed twin clutch DSG automatic gearbox. As with the current range of BlueMotion models, the Up! Lite uses a Start-Stop system to maximise efficiency and regenerative braking.

The Up! Lite is constructed from a mix of lightweight materials including aluminium and carbonfibre to keep the vehicle’s kerb weight to a minimum. Even the diesel engine has been optimised and weighs just 55 kg. This allows the concept’s modest 65 PS hybrid drivetrain to power the Up! Lite from rest to 62 mph in 12.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 100 mph.

The styling of the Up! Lite joins the mechanical changes in breaking new ground for Volkswagen. The Up! Lite debuts a new styling direction with obvious references to current products such as the Polo and Golf but with entirely new elements such as the rear end styling and the window line. Measuring 3,840 mm in length the concept is slightly shorter than the Polo and is styled to maximise aerodynamic efficiency. Examples of aerodynamic modifications include the front radiator grille which shuts off completely when it’s not required and tiny cameras which take the place of conventional wing mirrors.

The minimalist theme continues in the interior of the Up! Lite which features bright, clean surfaces to reduce clutter and therefore complexity. The main controls for the operation of the vehicle are grouped around the steering wheel, while the climate and entertainment functions are handled by the central touchscreen. Up front, the driver and passenger seats fold forward to allow access for the rear-seat passengers. For larger loads the rear seats and the front passenger seat can all fold flat into the floor.

Using components from the New Small Family of vehicles set to be launched from 2011 onwards, the Up! Lite is intended as a step towards a viable production car.

Hannover, 16th November 2009. It is durable, robust and can tackle any road, no matter how tricky: the Volkswagen Amarok will have to prove those claims from January 2010 during the world’s toughest rally. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is the “Official Supplier” to the Dakar Rally and a partner to the organiser, the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.). The new pickup from Volkswagen will be the Support Vehicle for the rally. The organiser is to use 20 Amarok, with a further 15 to be used as press and shuttle vehicles.

From 1st to 17th January 2010, the Dakar Rally will also see four teams from Volkswagen Motorsport as well as many other teams travelling 9,000 km through Argentina and Chile. The rally starts and finishes in Buenos Aires.

The Amarok will undergo an endurance test during the Dakar Rally, because it will have to handle all the challenges of the demanding stages: as the organiser’s vehicle to reconnoitre the rally stages, as a press vehicle and as a shuttle for the Volkswagen Motorsport team.

Four of the Volkswagen Amarok from the A.S.O. fleet will get additional off-road conversions for the trip, and four Panamericana multivans will also be used.

“We are pleased to be able to use the Volkswagen Amarok as our Support Vehicle, because the Dakar Rally demands the highest levels of technical perfection, reliability and endurance – from our Race Touareg as much as from the support vehicles. The Amarok is exactly the right vehicle for our team”, explains Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director.

“The Volkswagen Amarok is Volkswagen’s answer to the pickup and on the Dakar Rally – one of the last great adventures for mankind – it will have the chance to show what it’s made of and to demonstrate its flexibility and durability”, adds Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

“Moreover, the Volkswagen Amarok is built in Argentina and South America is one of the most important markets for this product, so taking part in the 2010 Dakar Rally was an absolute must for us”, stresses Schaller.

The Volkswagen Amarok will be seen at the Dakar Rally in Argentina for the first time and will then be launched initially in South American markets, followed by Europe. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is entering a new vehicle sector.
